Jack Frost Nipping at Your Toes

January 30, 2008

This weekend my son turned 14.  It’s hard to believe- especially after you hear this story.  I mean, most 14 year olds know everything, don’t they?  If that was the case here, it would have saved me a trip to the doctor!  But, let me start at the beginning.

Sunday morning was the typical running around like crazy to get ready for church.  (I wonder why that is when I usually leave the house hours earlier during the week!)  Add that to a late Saturday night filled with fun and games (Vegas Showdown is the best game ever- except for Settlers of Catan) with my sister and brother-in-law and a morning of getting everyone ready (amazing how different a 3 or 4 year old is from a 14 year old- also amazing how similar they are lol).  So, here sets the scene for our story.

Oh, how could I forget some of the key characters?  My sister’s 2 dogs- who were very good sports for the weekend away from home.

So, in our rush to get things done before church, someone- I don’t even remember who- asked my son to take the 2 dogs out.  Since we only have 1, there is only 1 chain.  So, he was supposed to let one out and then the other.  Unfortunately, the plan didn’t work out that way.  While letting one out, the other one flew out the door and down the street.  Without thinking, obviously without thinking, my son flew out after her.  Since everyone was rushing around, we had no idea this was happening.  I did notice he was not around, but figured he was right outside with the dog.

So, imagine my surprise when my barefoot- yes barefoot- son comes in the house wheezing from an asthma attack!  In case you live somewhere where it’s like 80 outside, let me tell you, I live nowhere near you!  It’s freezing here!  This morning with the windchill it was -25!  It wasn’t quite that cold Sunday, but it was pretty cold!  Of course, the pile of shoes by the door were not taken advantage of and he had just been running around outside barefoot for about 10 minutes!

This fact was not fully digested until much later.  During church he mentioned- ok whined- that his feet hurt.  I figured it was the typical reaction to being very cold and warming up- the tingly, strange feeling.  The rest of the day, he said nothing about it.  And, we spent the day together- playing games and spending a great time with my sister and her family.

That night, when I picked him up from youth group I asked how it went.  “Fine- except I couldn’t really run because of the blisters on my feet.”  What?!  When we got home, I looked at his red, swollen feet and saw huge blisters on one toe on each foot.  We had him soak his feet in epsom salt.  Why?  I don’t know.  Isn’t epsom salt a good cure for anything?

By the next morning, the number of blistered toes was increasing.  So, I called his doctor hoping she could just tell me he was fine and what to do.  No such luck.  After a trip to the doctor’s office, we found out he has 1st and 2nd degree burns on his toes and part of his feet.  They put a burn cream on him, wrapped his feet and sent us on our way.

So, now, we are changing the wrap daily and putting the medication on and hopefully never running through the snow barefoot- especially with a million shoes right by the door!

10 Things I Never Thought I’d Be Doing

January 24, 2008

Note: I started this a long time ago and never finished.  I’m amazed how things change so quickly with everything that has gone on in my life lately.  So, I’m adding to it now.

I got the idea for this from a great blogger you should all check out! http://rowdyrodi.wordpress.com/ She has a great way of putting things and sharing her life in a positive and humorous way.

So, here is my version of the things I never thought I’d be doing when I grew up- wait am I really a grown-up?!

1) I never thought I’d be a homeschool mom

2) I never thought I’d work in a grocery store- and like it!

3) I never thought I’d have a tarantula living in my house!

4) I never thought I’d be taking my 13 year old son to an alpaca farm to work 5 days a week.

5) I never thought I’d have 2 cats and 2 dogs. (Update- I now have only 1 dog- long story)

6) I never thought my husband would have to have heart surgery.

7) I never thought I could be so happy to see someone sit up in a chair.

8) I never thought I would enjoy Christmas so much without exchanging gifts with my husband.

9) I never thought prayers and kind words from family and friends would be so important to me.

10) I never thought I would be going to a different church than the one I’ve known since I was a child visiting my grandparents.

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

August 13, 2007

Several things caught my attention today.

First, I went to play tennis this evening and shared the tennis courts with the high school team getting ready for their season.  I left before them (I’m getting old!) and noticed every car in the lot was much newer and nicer than mine!  They are in high school!  I didn’t get my own car until I bought it.  And, when I did, I was lucky it had all 4 wheels!  Brakes were sporadic at best!  How do all these teens have such nice cars?  I refuse to buy my son a nice car when he turns 16!

When I got home from tennis, I checked the news online.  Here was one of the headlines.

Blind driver caught again

Strange as the headline may seem, it gets stranger!  It seems a 20 year old blind man was caught driving drunk 1 week after he was caught the first time.  Sadly, there were 3 other people in the car telling him where to go.  My question is this.  Just how drunk do you have to be to decide the blind, drunk guy is the best choice out of 4?!

I almost forgot!  This morning, my husband was doing a Forest Gump imitation.  Yes, I know.  And it was only 6 in the morning!  Anyway, my puppy freaked out!  She is terrified of his Forest Gump imitation.  She stared at him and then ran away!

Shoes

June 16, 2007

I never considered myself one of those shoe people. You know who you are. The closets are filled with shoes rarely or never worn, but standing at attention ready for just the right outfit to come along! But, this week shoes played a major role in my life.

Saturday- warm and sunny, beautiful! With a little time to spare, a hectic week behind me, what’s better than a trip to the beach to rest and relax? So, I packed the snacks, the water bottles, the blanket- actually an old sheet, my son, and our lab who loves the water, and off we went. When we got out of the car, Belle knew that water was just ahead, so off we flew through the sand until she hit water. Halfway down, my shoes flew off and my feet were burning in the sand too. So, the water was quite refreshing!

It was only when we went to leave after ropeburning my hands on Bell’s leash, hearing my son complain about holding the leash for awhile, and having wet dog/ sand coat the beach sheet and me for about the hundreth time (I’m sure that I still looked quite attractive!) that I decided to go. Heading back towards the car I happen to glance down and see part of one of my shoes sticking up through the sand. It was only then that I remembered I had shoes. So, then, loaded down with bags in the hot sun, I frantically searched for my right shoe. And searched. And searched. I swished through the sand all around and nothing. How could my shoe just disappear? I don’t understand! But, now, one of my favorite pairs of shoes is no longer a pair. I have one left foot sitting in my car- just in case the right one finds it’s way home somday! I’ll be ready.

Fast forward to Friday. It’s the end of a crazy week- both at work and home- always on the run- 10 hour days at work and then home to work some more. Fridays are an early day for me. I try to be in by 5:30. So, when my alarm went off, I got up and quietly took my shower and got ready in the dark- trying not to disturb my sleeping husband. He doesn’t have to get up ’til 6- how lucky! So, I tell him goodbye and rush off to work. I park and rush in the door to clock in. Hmmm. That’s funny. My shoe is slipping. Yes, shoe- not shoes. Ok, I better look down. Ys, my assumption is correct. Black on the right, brown on the left. Yes, my new fashion statement is to wear 2 different shoes to work! And, it’s even better if one of them is too big for me! Luckily, I was close enough to home that, when I was done there an hour later, I could run home and get 2 matching shoes! What a concept!

Hello world!

Testing- 1, 2, 3!

What makes wordpress so great?  This site is new to me and navigating through it is a challenge.  Or, maybe I’m just really tired from a very long day of work and play!  But, I would really like to hear from some people who use this site and find out why.

Maybe I should introduce myself.  I am a working mother who also homeschools my 13 year old son.  I am married to a wonderful man who is usually great at helping me with whatever I am trying to accomplish- teaching, cleaning, cooking, etc.   I also have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and (not by my choice) a tarantula.

In my spare time- who am I kidding?  I really don’t do anything in my spare time because by the time I have any time to spare I am exhausted from my day!  Luckily, I really enjoy most of the things that keep me so busy!  My job is interesting and always changing. Teaching my son is always teaching me as much as it is teaching him!   I spend a lot of time at my church doing things for the Sunday school and youth programs, and recently I started volunteering to teach a tennis class to my homeschool support group.  My family is very important to me- immediate and extended.  So, I try to spend as much time with them as possible.

So, that’s my life in a nutshell.  Let’s see what this looks like now.  Send me your comments and let me know what you think.
