My New Project

October 30, 2007

Last week, I started a new project at work.  I’m really excited about it because, along with getting to do something I love, I also think it will be a great asset to my company.  Since most people I know find everything online, we are creating a new website and I will be writing a food blog to go along with the site.  So, if you want to check out some great healthy eating sites, some great recipe sites, and some health related sites, they will be linked on my other site.  Along with the info links, I will be writing about new food trends, fun seasonal food and entertaining ideas, upcoming events at our stores, or whatever comes to mind- well not whatever!

Here’s the link- !  Tell me what you think.  I’m anxious to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly!

I am putting a permanent link on the right of my blog under Home and Family Sites so you can find me there anytime!

Time For Mom

October 30, 2007

A friend from my homeschooling group had a great idea.  Every once in awhile, we have a mom’s night out for the mom’s in the group.  Several of us felt we were ready for one- SOON!  I think it’s just that time of year.  You know, in the beginning everyone is excited to start something new for the year.  But, a few months in and everyone is ready for a break!

Anyway, she decided to host one and spent some time coming up with a theme.  She came up with a great idea!  What mom doesn’t have stress?  What mom doesn’t put herself last in the time category- this one needs her to this, that one needs her to do that, etc.  So, we are going to spend a few hours taking time out for mom.  We’ll discuss what stresses us out and ways we can destress.

I am in charge of coming up with some ideas for our discussion.  So, here I am at my trusty resource- the Internet.  And, you all are my first stop.  What do you do to relax- to avoid or relieve stress?  I’m interested in your thoughts and ideas.  I’ll also share mine as I find them.

So, comment and let me know!

Chore Lottery Gone Bankrupt

October 29, 2007

As much as I loved the idea- as proud I was that we developed this intricate plan, the chore lottery has declared bankruptcy.  While the concept seemed simple enough, it didn’t change the effect on our routine.  Instead of asking him about the list, I was asking him about the chore lottery- and finding out it wasn’t done.  So, after giving it a few weeks of trial time, I’ve decided it’s time to try something else.

Saturday, while looking online with my sister, we came across an interesting site.  It’s calld chore wars.  I’m just about to sign up, but the system was overloaded so I have to wait.  It seems to be in the begining stages so I’m expecting to find a few glitches.  The basic concept is that every member of the household signs up and as chores are done they log them in for points.  I think there is some game playing involved whn they log a chore, but I’m not too sure.

Has anyone else tried this?  I’ll let you know how it goes here.  Eventually something is bound to work- or eventually my son will get marrried and it’ll be somone else’s problem to get him to do his chores!  Anyway, here’s the link-

Autumn Goodies- Treats Without Tricks

October 29, 2007

With fall comes the change in temperature, the changing of the leaves, and Halloween.  With Halloween only a few days away, here are some fun ideas for some sweet treats!

My favorite Halloween treat is a yummy cake made to look like a pumpkin.  It’s really easy and really does look like a pumpkin.  All you need is a bundt cake pan, two yellow cake mixes, and white frosting mixed with orange food coloring.  Make both cake mixes in the bundt pan.  After they cool, put the flat sides of both cakes together using some frosting to hold them in place.  Then, frost with your orange frosting.  You can frost using a knife or spatula in an upward motion to make the lines on the pumpkin.  Use whatever candies you would like to decorate the face of the pumpkin.  Some ideas I’ve used are candy corn, gumdrops, or chocolate kisses.

For an extra fun time, before putting the two cakes together, put in a few surprises- spider rings, toy skeletons, etc.  Your family and friends will love it- after they realize they aren’t real!

Looking for something a little more healthy?  This is a great time for making apple crisp.  There are some really good mixes that make it really easy.  Calhoun Bend Apple Cinnamon Mix is great.  calhoun

Just slice up the apples, put them in your baking dish, and follow the mix directions.  In a few minutes, you have a yummy apple crisp.  I’ve even had it made in the microwave and it still tasted really good!

Be sure to check all candy before your kids dive into thier treasures.  If you think anything looks suspicious or anything is unwrapped, get rid of it.  The other good thing about making sure you check the candy first is that then you get to grab all the good stuff!  Do you really want them to have all of that?  You’re really just helping them out.

Brain Teaser Cheating?

October 20, 2007

OK- Did someone here cheat and do a search for some of the brain teaser questions?  It showed up in my stats that several of the series of letters were searched and that was how my blog was found.  Just wondering!  Very thoughtful of you to try to find the answers.  Did it work?  Has anyone figured them all out yet? (With or without the help of a search engine!)

7 Habits- Be Proactive

October 17, 2007

Today we started with the first habit- be proactive.  We watched the segmenton the first habit on the webcast.

I’m not sure if my son was completely awake since we started almost immediately when we got up- which is when I like to work out.  But, I think it was a good introduction to the habit.  We will follow it up with the chapter from the book for highly effective families tomorrow.  Since I haven’t had a chance to get the audio from the library, my son will read the book out loud (the treadmill has a place to put the book and the bike doesn’t).

It seems that 10 minutes is a good time frame to start with.  As we progress, we may increase it.

We started with this quote from Viktor Frankl- “When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”  I love this!  It took me a long time- and some hard lessons- to learn this.  But, learning it and living it have made me a much happier person.  When I stopped relying on others to make things right and started looking at what I can do to change it or how I relate to it, then life got alot easier!

They discussed making choices and being responsible for them.  Ineffective people would become products of circumstances whereas effective people would be products of choices.  Basically, the way I see it, instead of making excuses for why things aren’t happening, we should look for ways to make them happen.
